Texas Poll: School curriculum should be left to educators

AUSTIN — Eight of 10 Texans want high schools to teach contraception, including the use of condoms and abstinence, according to a statewide opinion poll that also shows high support for letting teachers and scholars write public school curriculum standards instead of the State Board of Education.

More than two-thirds of the respondents - 68 percent - agreed that “separation of church and state is a key principle of our Constitution,” although 49 percent also want to see “religion have more influence” on education. Only 21 percent said religion should have less influence in public schools.
The research arm of the Texas Freedom Network, a liberal-leaning group that monitors the board, commissioned the poll.
The poll surveyed 972 likely voters and was conducted by Washington-based Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. It had a margin of error of plus- or minus-4 percentage points.

Up to the age of puberty, education for these ends was acquired informally through play which imitated the activities of the elders, fighting, fishing, and hunting among boys, and domestic arts and skills among girls. This stage was followed by more formal training in adult occupations and in the arts of everyday life, but still by apprenticeship or imitation.
Regular ceremonial rites for the initiation of boys to manhood and girls to womanhood were performed during the age of puberty. The initiates were isolated from the community and from the opposite sex. The rites included abstinence from certain foods, among some groups they were accompanied by brutal ordeals intended to train the initiates in endurance of pain and privation, and to eliminate the unfit. In conclusion the whole of education was aimed to secure loyal adherence to the group traditions to which the individual was subordinated….
